Battles Epsom Salt is suitable for all-round veterinary use and a high quality source of Magnesium.
Epsom Salt (also known as Magnesium Sulphate) is a clear, colourless and odourless crystalline powder which is traditionally given orally (dissolved in water) to cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and horses which then acts as a powerful saline purgative (laxative). It can also be used as an effective electrolyte replacer for calves. Epsom Salt can also be absorbed through the skin which has shown benefits in treating swollen muscles and ligaments, bites, cuts and grazes.
Epsom Salt has a wide range of uses in the equine industry including preventing obesity, laminitis, poor general condition, nervousness, wariness, excitability and muscle tremors. This gives magnesium its reputation for having a calming influence on horses. A deficient horse is likely to have a poor tolerance to work and its muscles will tie up quite quickly. Magnesium is also known to play an important part in reducing equine obesity, and can lessen the risk of laminitis in animals that are prone to it during periods of strong spring grass growth.
